Avatar

With the ongoing crisis in Sudan continuing past 500 days, questions are swirling about whether Starlink’s satellite internet service is still available. While some reports suggest limited access, Starlink’s official website currently states that the service is unavailable and its future in Sudan is unknown.

Interestingly, Starlink has recently expanded its service to South Sudan, as shown on their availability map, offering hope to neighboring regions.

Why Starlink Was Set to Stop

Earlier this year, Starlink announced that it would cease services in several countries, including Sudan, citing licensing issues. This decision caused concern, as many people in Sudan, especially in remote regions, relied heavily on the service for connectivity.

In response to the potential shutdown, several organizations and individuals advocated for Starlink to continue providing services in Sudan, pointing out that the internet is essential, especially in conflict zones. While some users claim they still have access, Starlink has not officially commented on the situation.

So, what’s next?

Despite Starlink’s website confirming the service is unavailable in Sudan, reports continue to surface showing that a few fortunate individuals are still able to access it. How they’re doing it? No one’s quite sure!

Resellers have flooded social media platforms

Earlier this year, several TikTok users spread the word across Sudan by showcasing Starlink devices and how people were able to quickly access the internet, despite the ongoing connectivity challenges in the country.

This neighbourhood even made a business out of it – charging individuals up to 100SDG per hour for access.

The importance of connectivity

Having access to reliable internet, like Starlink, is crucial in conflict zones such as Sudan, where local telecom infrastructure has been severely disrupted. Starlink can serve as a lifeline, providing essential communication for families, humanitarian aid efforts, and even economic activity…

While the future of Starlink in Sudan remains uncertain, the need for such services is undeniable. Connectivity is key to resilience, and many hope for continued access to this vital resource.
