The upcoming Sharjah International Book Fair, running from November 6 to 17 at Expo Centre Sharjah, is taking big steps to support the publishing industry in Palestine, Lebanon, and Sudan. Organizers have announced that publishers from these countries will have their registration fees waived and will receive additional industry support during the event.
This initiative comes as a directive from Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, and Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority.
In light of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, and the Israel-Gaza war, many publishers are facing enormous challenges. From damaged cultural centers to disrupted operations, the impact has been widespread. Sheikha Bodour stressed the importance of safeguarding cultural heritage during these difficult times.
“Sharjah has always been a haven for Arab culture and intellectuals,” she said in a statement. “Our commitment to the Arab cultural project is unwavering, and we hope future editions of the Sharjah International Book Fair will find our culture and intellectuals thriving.”

The situation in Sudan has been dire. Beyond the human toll, the country’s creative industries are suffering. Publishers have had to navigate through disrupted operations, a lack of resources, and limited access to international markets due to the conflict.
For many, the Sharjah International Book Fair offers a glimmer of hope, providing a platform for Sudanese voices to be heard, books to be sold, and cultural heritage to be preserved. Sudan is facing a critical moment, and initiatives like this are a reminder that the international community still stands with them.
