Six Months of War In Sudan: Violence, Health Emergencies, and Economic Struggles

In a stark look at Sudan’s current situation, various crises have emerged since April 2023, impacting the lives of millions. The situation is dire, affecting the nation’s health, safety, and economy.

Rising Cases of Rape and Assault

Since April 2023, Sudan has seen a surge in rape and sexual assault cases, with a staggering 160 reported. Shockingly, these figures may only represent 2% of the total cases, pointing to a silent epidemic that remains largely hidden.

Disturbingly, these crimes have affected minors as young as 12 years old, further highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue. It’s estimated that 4 million women and girls across Sudan are at risk of sexual violence.

Violence and Displacement in Darfur

West Darfur has been particularly affected, with over 10,000 lives lost since the beginning of this war. The violence has driven a mass exodus, with 70% of the population in some Darfur regions fleeing their homes to escape ethnically targeted violence.

Healthcare Crisis in Conflict-Affected Areas

With 70% of hospitals non-functional in conflict-affected areas, including Darfur, North Kordofan, and Khartoum, millions are left with limited access to essential healthcare. This situation adds to the growing challenges faced by Sudan, which include malnutrition due to prolonged drought, disease outbreaks such as COVID-19, measles, cholera, and more, and a growing burden of more chronic diseases.

Six Months of Ongoing Conflict and Its Impact

The crisis continues, with October seeing conflict erupt in several neighbourhoods in El Obeid and Omdurman. Casualties and home destruction are the painful results. At least four individuals have already lost their lives, and 17 others sustaining injuries.

Economic Fallout

Sudan’s economy is also reeling from these crises, with 66% of the nation’s food enterprises and factories ceasing operations. This has led to a 50% job loss for the workforce. The cumulative cost of this ongoing turmoil is estimated to be an astounding $100 million daily.

Sudan’s Education Crisis Worsens

Even before the violence erupted in April of this year, Sudan was grappling with educational challenges, as nearly 7 million children were already out of school due to the compounding effects of poverty and instability. The ongoing war threatens to deprive the entire generation of Sudanese children of their right to education.

In the face of this crisis, UNICEF and its partners remain committed to facilitating access to quality education and ensuring children can return to school safely as soon as possible.

Call for Support

In these trying times, support is crucial. Youth initiatives and organizations like @hanabneiho and SAPA-USA are providing essential aid and resources. Additionally, Doctors Without Borders plays a vital role in responding to the health challenges that have arisen from the violence and mass displacement.

Sudan faces multifaceted challenges that demand immediate attention. The international community’s support and humanitarian efforts are essential to help the nation navigate these crises and rebuild towards a more stable and prosperous future.
