In a remarkable display of determination, 10-year-old Sultan Al-Bariqi has become Saudi Arabia’s youngest person to complete a 150-km trek on foot from Al-Namas to Abha

Accompanied by his father, Mohammed Al-Bariqi, an avid adventurer, Sultan completed the five-day journey last Thursday, aiming to promote tourism in the Asir region and showcase the health benefits of walking.

Mohammed Al-Bariqi explained that their journey highlighted Asir’s cool climate, dense vegetation, and towering mountains. Starting from Al-Namas and passing through Balasmar, Billahmer, Tanomah, and Shaar, the route offered lush green landscapes and natural beauty, making it a hub for domestic tourism. “July typically sees high temperatures, but Asir enjoys a moderate, cool climate perfect for hiking and exploration,” Mohammed said.

Despite initial concerns about Sultan’s age, his enthusiasm and curiosity kept him motivated throughout the journey

The trek was filled with moments of encouragement from passersby who offered drinks and kind words, boosting Sultan’s spirits. Sustained by light meals and energy-boosting fruits, Sultan maintained high spirits and fitness throughout the trek.

The journey not only marked a personal achievement for the young boy but also underscored the therapeutic benefits of long-distance walking and environmental consciousness

Mohammed Al-Bariqi, 52, is no stranger to long-distance walks, having previously trekked from Asir to Makkah for Hajj in 16 days and to Madinah in 27 days. He advocates walking as a holistic health practice, urging people to reduce car dependency and embrace walking for its comprehensive health benefits.

Sultan, initially apprehensive, found the experience life-changing and now aspires to make long-distance walking a regular part of his life. He encourages his peers to embrace physical activity, highlighting the universal importance of exercise for a healthier, more active society.
