Twenty divers from Sharjah Police, and Emirates Diving Centre worked to clean up rubbish and waste around an old shipwreck off the coast of Sharjah yesterday.
The annual ‘Because We Care’ campaign is organised by the Sharjah Aquarium and aims to clean up a different area each year.
The divers worked to retrieve old fishing nets and garbage from the MV Dara wreck which is home to various marine life and animals.
The wreck lies 20m underwater, and sank in a storm back in 1961, after a powerful explosion struck the engine casing and started a series of fires on the ship.
“Over the course of time, the wreck has spawned new life and has become a vital part of the marine ecosystem in our waters. Today, we wanted to honour the importance of volunteering and environmental responsibility as set out in the UAE Year of Giving by focusing our annual beach clean-up on preserving such an important site.”
