In 1996, the late founding father H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan began constructing the mosque. Over the span of 11 years, construction took place. He served as the UAE President since the formation of the nation on December 2, 1971 until he passed away in 2004. Additionally, he served as the Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi from 1966 to 2004.

Another fact of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, he was born in the city of Al Ain. Moreover, he was the youngest of the 4 sons of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi, from 1922 to 1926.
