UAE Just Made It Easier For Tourists From 52 Countries To Get A Driving Licence
There is good news for those visiting the UAE. The Ministry of Interior has confirmed residents from over 52 nationalities can now legally drive in the Emirates using their national driving licences, without the need for a test, provided they are not residing in the country.

However, those planning to move to the UAE must meet six conditions in order to exchange a foreign licence for a new one
- An eligible country must have issued the foreign licence
- Legal driving age requirement must be met
- Foreign licence must be valid
- Applicant must hold a UAE residency visa or provide proof of their UAE address
- Must pass an eye test
- For some countries, the original licence must be surrendered under existing agreements
MOI also clarified the difference between “licence recognition” and “licence exchange”
Licence recognition refers to the use of national driving licenses within the UAE when the person is not a resident, whereas license exchange means replacing a national driving license with a UAE-issued license during legal residency.
Applicants who wish to exchange their licence will need to submit some documents to go ahead with the process
These include:
- A legal Arabic translation of the foreign licence
- A copy of the original licence
- A payment of AED600
This recent update is part of MOI’s “Markhoos” initiative.
Some of the countries included in the list are Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, Turkey and Ireland, among others. The complete list can be found on Ministry of Interior’s official website.
