Dubai, city of lights and dreams, is famous for its luxury gifts. Family back home are often thrilled to have one member residing in, returning from or to Dubai and often request gift items that are exclusive to Dubai.
Almost everyone except prudent Moms.
The Indian skyrocketing market prices for tomatoes made a mom request her Dubai-based daughter to bring 10 kilograms of tomatoes in her luggage when returning to her home country, India.
Surprising much? Tomatoes in Dubai – which are mostly imported from India – cost around AED2 – AED6 per kilogram. While in India, due to skyrocketing prices, the cost is around INR 300 per kg equalling to AED 13.42 per kg.
The obedient daughter did her due diligence and ingeniously packed the tomatoes in boxes, allowing them to return to their country of origin in a healthy state. What a time of their lives those tomatoes must have had; getting a return trip from their home country, which is more than most tomatoes, or vegetables or fruits can say anyway.
My sister is coming to India from Dubai for her children’s summer holidays and she asked my mum if she wanted anything from Dubai and my mother said bring 10 kilos of tomatoes. 😑😑 And so now she has packed 10kg tomatoes in a suitcase and sent it.

This incident is yet another example of how soaring market prices are making people find a different road to their requirements without paying the inflation fee.
Earlier this year, UAE based Filipinos were taking home suitcases full of onions, as the price back home had hit an all time high at AED 36.70 per kilogram ($10). Meanwhile in the UAE, the prices of tomatoes are around Dh1.50 per kg.
All’s well, the tomato story ends well!
