Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Mahtoom approved designs to launch The Mohammed bin Rashid Stadium. The stadium will cost 3 billion AED to build and will be located in the Al Weer area . The stadium will be fully air conditioned and complies with regulations set by FIFA, the football world governing-body. It’s unclear what teams will play there as yet, but with a 60,000 seater capacity, it’s sure to attract a lot of big matches and teams. It’s likely to be completed in 2018.
Currently, the local football teams have smaller stadiums, such as the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium where Al Jazira play with a capacity of 15,000 and currently being expanded. There is also the Sevens stadium that holds are 25,000 people and the Cricket Stadium in Dubai Sports City that can hold unto 30,000 people. But this will be the first purpose-built stadium of it’s kind in Dubai. Currently, the UAE plays it’s home International Matches in the capital Abu Dhabi, at the Zayed Sports City Stadium with a capacity of 43,000, the largest in the UAE. In 2014, a new football stadium opened in Al Ain, the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium, holding 25,000 people.
There had been plans to build a similar stadium near the cricket one, however, it’s still waiting on funding, where Should that go ahead, the UAE wouldn’t be too far away from having the ability to host a tournament such as the FIFA World Cup. In 2019, the UAE will host the Asian Cup, for the first time since 1996.
