The recent rains in Dubai led to much speculation on social media about rain in Dubai. The people wanted to know: Is it going to rain? It is raining in Dubai right now? Is it raining money in Dubai? Yeah, we were surprised by that one too…
Questions abound in times of uncertainty. Earlier today it was made clear that online speculation about the rain isn’t considered favorably.
According to Emirates 24/7, Colonel Dr. Salah Obeid Al Ghoul, Director of Law Respect Culture Bureau, General Secretariat of the Office of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior asked people to refer to official sources for accurate information and to be prudent with information on social media.
The report stressed that to ‘spread rumours’ is a criminal offence and that violators will be sentenced to imprisonment ranging between one month and three years if found guilty of ‘deliberately broadcasting false or malicious news or any news that breaches public security or harms public interest’.
According to the report, people can also be fined up to AED 1m if they share videos and images of the weather that harm the country’s reputation and disrupt public peace.
