The summer months in the UAE can get as hot as 38 to 42 degrees C (101 to 108 degrees F). That’s way too hot for a human, let alone a furry animal. If a dog gets too hot, then it may end up getting dehydrated or get heatstroke. Unfortunately, some dogs may die from the heat. So, how do you keep your dog safe during these heatwaves? We’ve compiled a list of 5 tips to help your dog stay comfortable in the UAE heat.
However, in awful heat like this, your pooch should not be outside any longer than a couple of minutes. Take your doggo outside to go to the bathroom and then come right back in. If your dog tends to wander or enjoys hanging around outside, it might be best to put them on a leash while they go the bathroom. Then you can immediately bring them back inside when they’re done. They should be in an air-conditioned area when inside. Often, dogs will lay down on their sides on hard flooring in an attempt to get cool. If you don’t have an air conditioner, you can place a bowl of ice cubes in front of a fan. It will act as an air conditioner. Let your dog lay down in the way of the airflow to give them a chance to cool off.
The mat will allow them to lay down in a cool place, while the collar and vest will allow your dog’s body to absorb the cold. However, you need to monitor your pet while wearing a cooling vest or collar. Their body will absorb the cold quickly. So, after ten minutes or so of wearing it, it could have negative effects. So, be sure to use it sparingly and only when needed. You can use it multiple times per day, but keep an eye on your pup.
Dogs don’t sweat as we do. They pant. If you notice symptoms such as:
● Discomfort
● Excessive drooling
● Excessive panting
● Restlessness
● Vomiting
● Wobbly movements
Chances are, your dog might have heatstroke. Do not try to cool down your pup. Otherwise, their body will just heat itself again to combat the cold. If you notice your pooch acting this way, you need to rush them to the vet immediately.
A no-brainer! Some dogs have high energy levels and need a lot of physical and mental stimulation. If they don’t get their walk in each day, they’ll be crazy. However, some dogs are worse in the heat than others. For example, a large, fluffy Bernese Mountain Dog will overheat quicker than a small, smooth-coated French Bulldog. If it’s too hot and you can’t skip a walk for that day, then it’s best to go during dawn or dusk. The day will be at its coolest when the sun is just beginning to rise, or it’s sunset. Do not try going at noon when the sun is highest in the sky or in the middle of the afternoon. This is when it will be the hottest. It won’t be safe for you or your dog to be outside at that time.
Hydration is key when it comes to being in excessive heat. Make sure you have a fresh bowl of cool water readily available for your dog at all times. If your dog is not getting enough water, then it may end up dehydrated.
They’ll begin to show symptoms such as:
● Dry nose
● Dry-looking eyes (may look bloodshot)
● Excessive drooling
● Lethargy
● Loss of appetite
● Panting
● Vomiting
Dehydration can cause your pooch to get sick, so make sure they have plenty of fresh water. If your pooch isn’t enticed to drink, then you can add a couple of ice cubes to the water bowl. In addition, feed your doggo lighter food. In such excessive heat, we tend to lose our appetites or not want to eat hot food. This goes for your dog as well. So you don’t need to feed them as much, or you can find a different dog food that’s lighter on their stomach than what you feed them during the cold months.
Did you know that you can feed certain fruits to your pooch? Not only are there health benefits, but some fruit has high water content to help keep your doggo stay hydrated. For example, you can feed your doggo cantaloupe, honeydew melon, or watermelon during an excessive heatwave. These fruits are hydrating, packed with nutrients, and tasty to boot. Your pup will surely thank you later.
Are there any tips we missed? It’s not always easy to help your doggo beat the heat, but it’s doable. Moreover, it’s necessary for your dog’s health and wellbeing. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to help get your pooch through an intense heatwave.
