Quran-Burning protest in Stockholm, Sweden

Protests capture public attention and ignite conversations. They have the potential to spark meaningful societal transformation and create a more inclusive and equitable world. However, the Quran-burning protest in Stockholm, Sweden provides the opposite effect.

The Quran is the Islamic sacred book, believed to be the word of God as dictated to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). So, when Swedish police granted a man permission to demonstrate a protest in which he tears and burns the Holy book the Muslim world had to speak out.

The UAE summoned the Swedish ambassador Her Excellency Liselott Andersson regarding the Quran-burning protest

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFAIC) informed her of the UAE’s protest and strong condemnation of the Swedish government’s allowing of such protests. Furthermore, the ministry condemned the allowance of extremists in Stockholm. It also stated that the Swedish government is evading its international responsibility and lacks respect for social values in this regard.

Moreover, MoFAIC expressed the UAE’s refusal to use freedom of expression as a marketer of such heinous acts.

The Quran-burning protest fell on the Islamic Holiday, Eid Al Adha

The man tore up and burned a copy of the Quran in front of the central mosque in Stockholm with the permission of Swedish police. Furthermore, Swedish police rejected several recent applications for anti-quran demonstrations. While courts have overruled those decisions, saying they infringed on freedom of speech.

Additionally, someone posted the video of the Quran-burning protest on Twitter.

The Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson gave a statement about the protest at a press conference on Wednesday

“It’s legal but not appropriate,” he stated.

The PM added that it was ultimately up to the police to make decisions on demonstrations and Quran-burning protests.
