A Dubai man was left shocked after the recruitment process with a US multinational took a sour turn.
The Kuwaiti born Syrian passport holder went through two rounds of interviews before being told he could not be accepted for a job position because, as an American company, they could not do business with certain countries, the company also told him the decision had nothing to do with his skillset. He shared the story anonymously with Lovin.
He was first contacted by a talent acquisition technical resourcer and asked to send his CV. Then he took part in two phone interviews, arranged by senior talent acquisition.
After the interviews he was asked to share his passport…
“Right after (they) got in touch again asking me to send a photocopy of my passport, after much confusion from his side about how come I have a Syrian passport when it says I was born in Kuwait. And after clearing things up for him and telling him that being born in Kuwait doesn’t grand me citizenship he simply replied ‘we are checking now’.
Then last Thursday 27th of September (they) called me from a UK number telling me basically that they are an American company and they cannot do business with Syrian nationals and that includes recruiting as well, and that it has nothing to do with my skill-set. I was in shock to be honest so I just thanked him and hang up.”
The company broke the news by phone call and allegedly told him his skillset had nothing to do with the decision.
The man was hesitant to share his story and wishes to remain anonymous. The company has been contacted for comment.
