This Is Bloody Amazing News – A Hijab Emoji Has Been Approved After A Massive Online Campaign

When emojis were first introduced, little did we know how much use we would have for them.

There are expressive emojis to describe every feeling and, since the last update, there are a range of basic skin tones too. But, until now, a woman in a hijab has not made the list.

That is, until a 15 year old teen questioned the lack of a hijab emoji

Two months ago we documented the story of Rayouf Alhumedhi. A 15-year-old-girl who questioned the lack of a hijab emoji. She first approached Apple but got no response, she then got in touch with Unicode Consortium, a non-profit company that develops emojis. With over 550 million women in the world who wear a hijab, she argued her case.

The emoji, along with 50 others, will be added to smartphones in 2017

It’s better late than never, we suppose. Fair play to Rayouf for speaking out, but we’re wondering why this has taken so long

What other emojis can we look forward to?

After a serious process of lengthy proposals and approvals a new list of 50 emojis has been added. Those included are a heavily bearded man, a woman breastfeeding, a nude person enjoying a steam room, a rock climber, a man in a yoga pose and an alien spaceship will all be part of the update.

Most praise the welcome of the hijab while others have more pressing concerns

So many emojis…
