So you just moved to Dubai and you’re getting all settled but you find that some conversations just don’t make a lot of sense – why is that?
The Emirati culture is very much engraved in all residents, no matter where they come from. You’ll likely find that non-Emiratis say some Emirati words because that’s just the Dubai way. If you’re confused, consider this the official dictionary to help you feel more at ease.
Most cab drivers in Dubai will refer to ‘go straight’ and ‘seeda’ because it’s the local way.
This word means ‘be quiet’ but maybe don’t use it with people because it’s a touch aggressive.
Someone asks you how much do you love puppies, you’ll say ‘wayed’ because you love ’em a lot!
Meaning: as if. Because when someone is showing off, you can just reply with a simple ‘awina’.
It’ll be pronounced like you’re asking a question because well it is a question – it means ‘like this?”
When someone’s telling you a really shocking story, say “kheba” and BAM they’ll think you’re from here! (Well, not really).
When someone is looking fly, they’re looking ‘kashkha.’ It applies if its a new outfit, haircut, etc.
