On Tuesday, 21 June 1977, Britain’s age-old newspaper The Times ran a special report on the UAE. It had only been five to six years since the nascent country had joined together to form the United Arab Emirates.
The rare images of the first two pages of the paper just surfaced online from the Instagram page @dubaihistory famous for uploading historic pictures of Dubai and the other Emirates.
The photos of the old broadsheet feature headlines at the top followed by an advertisement on the front page, much like how UAE newspapers look even today. If you have a quick look at the headlines, you won’t be surprised to find that the achievement streak of the UAE had started since its earliest days.

Beyond that, it also features ads of The National Bank of Dubai Ltd., The Bank of Nova Scotia, and InterContinental Hotel, Dubai. Other headlines include the British Empire’s crackdown of piracy in the region followed by the advertised announcement of the continued collaboration of constructors Al Futtaim and Wimpey.
It’s interesting to note that back in the day, the country was already focused on the advancement of infrastructure, as much as it is today. No wonder the UAE has progressed through leaps and bounds in only five decades. 50 years is childhood in terms of country age worldwide – here’s to 50 more!Â
