It’s no secret that EVERY university student dreams of walking up on a stage to collect their hard-earned degree, having their parents/guardians, peers and professors cheer them on with pride and delight… it’s a huge milestone and a commemoration that students highly anticipate and yearn for.
The normal that we knew went for a toss when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world on 30 January 2020, and all education institutions had to shift to remote learning and held virtual events in place of in-house events to prevent the spread of the novel virus. This was a huge adjustment for students and teachers at the time.
With that being said, a British Dubai-based university saw a huge fallout with their students over the ‘alleged’ lack of initiative being taken to organize a convocation ceremony.
Middlesex University, Dubai sent an email to the graduating class of 2020 back in May of last year announcing the postponement of the convocation until March 2021. With the March 2021 ceremony being delayed again, eager students took to the university’s official Instagram handle to voice their plight under posts.
In a statement to Lovin Dubai, a student who completed her bachelor’s degree in International Business from Middlesex, Dubai back in 2020 said that,
Due to the pandemic, we had received an email from the university informing us that the graduation was postponed from 2020 to 2021.
However, Mdx has promised us a graduation ceremony in the month of March, 2021.
7 months later, not only did they not update us, give us any follow-ups on what the situation is, but they have actively tried to stop us from questioning them. Several students had raised their voices on social media, posted comments and stories on Instagram hoping to be heard. However, in return, not only did they still not respond to any of these messages, Middlesex has also blocked these students and tried to remove their comments. After 2-3 days of continuous efforts, they have finally responded to us quoting the same line that they had told last year “we’re making arrangements”.
Adding that,
We were in contact with other universities prior to this, and what made us furious and actually take initiative in doing is this, other universities either had their graduation over zoom, or they have confirmed dates this month (October) when their graduation would be held. We realized unless we push for it, we were never going to get one.
The date has been confirmed for 23 March 2022 at the Dubai Opera!
