The RTA Might Consider A Flexible Toll System To Help Manage Traffic

The RTA might implement a new flexible toll system to help manage the traffic situation in Dubai.

In a conversation that happened on ‘X’ between top UAE lawyer Habib Al Mulla and the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), it was revealed that the RTA is considering a flexible toll system as a future solution for the traffic scenario in Dubai

This is however not a near possibility.

What is a flexible toll system?

Dr Habib Al Mulla explains the concept clearly in his tweet (translated from Arabic):

Introducing the Dynamic Toll system, or variable tariffs, so that fees rise during peak times and decrease during times when congestion is less. This helps reduce pressure on Salik streets at peak times by directing traffic to other streets to avoid high fees. On the other hand, imposing variable fees according to the amount of congestion achieves more fairness for road users instead of imposing one fee all the time, even if the street is empty.

Basically, higher fees during peak times to discourage motorists from using the same road all at once.

The RTA responded in agreement, adding that this system is being considered as a future solution

However, this plan is not in the pipeline yet because the UAE is already making strategic moves to increase the thriving city’s traffic capacity.

There are several road expansion works under work, and with the arrival of two new SALIK toll gates, things are meant to change by later this year.
