Audiences in the UAE are noticeably more reserved than anywhere else in the world and it’s not often any performance gets a standing ovation, so when the crowd jumped to their feet following a performance of Mary Poppins at Dubai Opera, it’s pretty clear the crowd was a little more than impressed.
The modern set (a far-cry from the old days when a dozen stage hands were needed for every scene change) and an absolutely faultless cast set the scene for one amazing show. Here’s everything you need to know
The show is part of an international travelling tour which initially opened in 2004, it ran in the West End for three years, Broadway for six and it has also toured Australia, New Zealand, the U.S and the UK.
The show has been rehearsed and tweaked repeatedly over the years, meaning the show at Dubai Opera is the ultimate product of those developments.
The set is amazing; it’s Dubai Opera, you wouldn’t expect any less. But it’s the cast of this unforgettable tour that steal the show.
The talent was incredible; as they sang and danced their way through each memorable hit, note-perfect, you couldn’t but be in awe of each and every person on stage. It wouldn’t be fair to single out any individual BUT shout out to the kids playing Michael and Jane Banks – outstanding performances for such a young age.
You can’t take pictures during the show, but trust us on this one
Arrive on time (and allow for traffic in Downtown at the time). The doors close strictly at start time, although the stewards will allow people enter at appointed times throughout the show
Dress nice, you are going to the opera after all
Put your phone away (not only is it distracting to the performers, it’s also distracting to the people sitting around you)
