As a crazy music fanatic and musician (well, drummer) I love and dearly miss proper musicians playing real live music since leaving my home in London. Yes, there are quite a few spots in Dubai with live music if you really look for it, but they are all pretty similar and are not necessarily dedicated venues. So, if you are tired of listening to the usual bands plod through their top 40 set night after night then this is the place for you. Muze at Souk Al Bahar has a new Soul and Jazz night with their superstar performer Rouba and her band every Friday night, and it’s fab.
There are many things to like about this chic but casual evening hideaway. This club has been designed with live music as its most important influencer. It’s a perfect size and shape for an intimate music venue, where everyone has a great view of the musicians. There are comfy sofas surrounding the stage, cozy alcoves and high chairs back at the bar if you prefer.
The sound tech is obviously a clever chap and has nailed the sound, no matter where you are sat. Don’t just expect Soul and Jazz though, Rouba and her band have plenty more in their musical locker and will also happily take requests.
The musicians are extremely competent, and the talent doesn’t seem to stop on the stage with various musicians coming out of the woodwork to jam and join in the party atmosphere. And a party is exactly what it is, you don’t go to Muze to sit quietly in the corner and chat. Rouba and her band are clearly very passionate about what they do, and they do it well. Rouba’s enthusiasm is infectious, for us she made Muze literally sing, if Muze were a ten she made it go to eleven.
Being as we were here to review everything, live music, food, drinks, atmosphere etc, we did our best. After a few starters, a couple of mains and a few samples of their cocktails we can report back with gold stars all round. The menu is Mexican Fusion and the food was delicious, the simple sounding Chicken Quesadillas were packed full of filling and flavour and my steak was one of the best I have had in Dubai, and that’s saying a lot. Considering the focus is on the music their food was surprisingly good.
For you cocktail fans, you will find all of your classics and other exotic cocktails professionally created by their expert mixologists.
Yes, well of course! Come down on a Friday and receive three free drinks. What do you lads get? You get to not have to buy the ladies their first three drinks, win!
Expect to pay between 60-90AED for decent sized starters like the Chicken Quesadillas. It’s around 90-160AED for a main that’s worth every penny. A bottle of hops is around 50AED and Cocktails are from around 60AED.
This is a night out for real music lovers, as you are still reading then that means you. Pop along and I am sure you will be going back again and again with all of your friends, I know I will. We had an amazing evening and were practically the last to leave.
Muze opens on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9pm to 3am.
