In a show of international support, the UAE has agreed to allow 15 Guantanamo Detainees resettle here. Many countries have refused to resettle former Guantanamo Bay detainers, it would have been easy for the UAE to say no and stay out of it, but they have agreed to do so. The UAE is continuing to show good-will through foreign policy, we learned yesterday how much aid has been contributed by the UAE to people effected by the war in Yemen.
The 15 detainees included 12 Yemeni’s and three Afghanis. It is worth pointing out that these prisoners have never been charged of a crime, and have spent 14 years at Guantanamo Bay.
“The United States is grateful to the government of the United Arab Emirates for its continued assistance in closing the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay,”
Lee Wolosky, the State Department special envoy who negotiates such transfers
To put this into context, closing Guantanamo was first Obama’s executive order when he got to office seven and a half years ago. He has six months left and before this transfer there were 76 detainees remaining from the 775 detainees that have been brought to Guantanamo.
There is Obama’s legacy to play for, but this could also have an impact on the upcoming US election. A piece in the New York Times this week made clear the impact on of a high approval rating on the election, claiming that Obama’s current term high levels will help fellow democrat Hiliary Clinton in the race to be the next President of the United States.
Guantanmo Bay in Cuba was opened in January 2002 to hold foreign fighters suspected of links to the Taliban or the al-Qaida terrorist organization.
