Recently, an issue that has been tugging at the heartstrings of animal lovers in the city was brought to Lovin Dubai’s attention. Residents in Mirdiff and various areas have reported instances of stray cats being rounded up and taken away in vans. This issue has raised questions and concerns, as these stray cats are being removed regardless of whether they have been neutered or not. While pest control companies are involved, the fate of these animals remains unclear, leaving the community distraught.
“My name is Flavia Christianini, I’ve been living in the UAE for 16 years, and I started helping the cats around 5 years ago,” says a concerned resident.
Many dedicated individuals, have been actively working to provide care for sick and injured strays found on the streets. These rescuers spend their own money to save these animals, covering vet bills, neutering, and returning them to their habitats. It is disheartening for them to witness the sudden removal of these cats.
These cats are often healthy, neutered, vaccinated, and some are even microchipped. Reports of vans patrolling the city for a massive cleanup has caused distress and worry among the animal-loving community.
Reports of cats being poisoned, killed, or taken away have left everyone in tears. The dedicated efforts, time, and money invested by rescuers to improve the lives of these animals are being upended.
The lack of proper care and the abandonment of these animals at different stages of decomposition have added to the collective distress.
Many residents have taken it upon themselves to control the population of strays and provide them with the care they need. However, the recent events have shed light on the challenges faced by these animals despite community efforts.
On a related note, feeding strays is prohibited in many parts of Dubai, with strict penalties imposed on those caught feeding animals in certain communities. According to the Animal Welfare Groups of the UAE, feeding strays is discouraged as it can contribute to higher reproduction rates. The Dubai Municipality Rules and regulations state that individuals found feeding stray cats, dogs, cows, and birds may face a fine of AED500.
As concerns about the treatment of strays in the city continue to grow, many are hoping for a resolution that considers the well-being of these animals and the efforts of those who strive to make a difference.
