OPINION: Dubai Residents Are Getting Unnecessarily Salty With Tele-Marketers

We all go through life dealing with our struggles, completely unaware of what the person beside us is going through. Many a time we take out our frustrations on those who disrupt even a second of our ‘precious’ time. You know the saying “save the drama for your mama”, well these days the drama seems to be unloaded on telemarketing reps and we Dubai folks are very much guilty of the same.

Getting those back-to-back sales calls, the scripted oration, the unwillingness to conclude the conversation without the promise of a sale… it definitely gets infuriating, especially if you’re on a time crunch, however, that shouldn’t dictate the tone in which we speak to the reps.

Telemarketing positions are often the most demanding and draining

Imagine spending nine hours a day calling and attempting to converse with strangers just to bag that ONE sale. Telemarketers are given intense targets, deadlines, repetitive work, tight supervision and monitoring. On top of work pressure, telemarketers have to put up with uninterested or downright hostile customers over the phone literally from the first word the telemarketer utters.

Apart from having the skill to deal with disrespectful customers, these reps have to work hard to develop a thick skin to prevent the stress, and anxiety due to pressure from their employers and customers getting to them. The industry is such where in the target-based environment, these reps are forced to sell people things they don’t want, it’s not out of choice, it’s out of duty.

Disrespecting agents just doing their job isn’t a gain for you nor the agent on the other side of the call.

If you’re really frustrated with consecutive sales calls then the Dubai Economy (DED) issued a legal method for you to block spam calls

DED shared a video with details on the simple steps you can take to report such sales calls.

As consumers, you too have your rights, and if you’re NOT looking for random calls disrupting your day-to-day obligations then can submit your complaints on unsolicited calls online via the ‘do not disturb’ smart service (that was launched earlier this year) on dnd.ded.ae in a few simple steps.

This service enables consumers to report calls from entities and marketing agencies promoting their products and services.

The Commercial Compliance & Consumer Protection (CCCP) team will then have your contact erased from the reported company’s database.

If sales calls really get on your last nerve then have them blocked BUT do reconsider the way you speak to call centre workers when you end up picking their calls

Before adding to their stress and emotional exhaustion just know that “abusive and difficult” customers are one of the main complaints from call centre workers… imagine having to go through that five sometimes six days a week!

Any normal person would find it challenging to remain cheerful in the face of severe client aggression.
