More Wi-FI and new cameras; RTA taxis are getting upgrades and it’s hard to keep up!
Wi-FI will soon be rolled out in more Dubai taxis. Currently Wi-Fi is already available in a number of taxis but the Roads and Transport Authority, in partnership with du, has announced a further 10,000 taxis will be connected.
Wi-Fi will be rolled out in test phases, according to a Khaleej Times report.
A trial period is currently in progress.
10 taxis have three new cameras fitted; one at the front of the vehicle, one at the back and one inside. The potential new system will also aid data collection for town-planning.
Currently, the accuracy of the cameras is at 95%, the RTA is working to upgrade the technology to 99% accuracy.
The high-spec cameras can read faces and recognise number plates.
Number plate tracking means authorities have a fast-track way of knowing if cars are on the road illegally, if registration renewal is required and the number of cars from different emirates that are on the roads.
The cameras can even detect incorrect road signs, adverts on roads and mistakes in commercial signs.
If the trial period is successful, the system will be rolled out to 500 more taxis.
