An Emirates flight attendant has been accused of stealing more than AED18,500 cash from the wallets of two business-class passengers.
The crew member allegedly took AED9,000 and another AED9,549 from the wallets of two Emirati brothers on a flight from Thailand to Dubai on June 21, reports The National.
The brothers left their belongings unattended to assist their ailing father when the theft happened mid-flight.
The pair, along with their parents were on a trip to Thailand for medical treatment. After realising that the money has been stolen from their wallets, they alerted the cabin supervisor. When the plane landed, aircrew called the police.
“My father felt tired and my brother and I went to him in business class leaving our belongings, including the wallets, back on our seats. Then we returned to find the money missing,” said the youngest son.
Upon investigation, police found that an Egyptian steward, aged 37, had taken the cash after his fingerprints matched with those left behind on an AED100 note.
The flight attendant initially pleaded not guilty, but later confessed to the crime after realising that a fingerprint match has been made.
He told officers that when the theft was reported to the police, he became scared and flushed the cash down the toilet at DXB Airport on the same day.
The next court hearing will take place on November 11.
