Facebook, Instagram groups and websites selling endangered animals in the UAE have been outed.
An investigation by Gulf News revealed some pages are charging as little as AED1,900 for a marmoset monkey, a species of monkey that can live as a domestic animal, however animal rights activists deplore the action.
You can have a monkey delivered to your door at a fee according to the report.
“Well-trained marmoset monkeys, tamed and ready for a new home.”
“Marmoset and capuchin monkeys for sale. They are very playful with kids and get along with other pets. They are also potty trained. Please contact for more information if interested.”
These beautiful animals reach sexual maturity at five-years-old and at this point can become dangerous and destructive. It’s common for people to adopt monkeys as babies and ‘re-home’ later on. This is horrific for the welfare of the animal.
The UAE has strict rules regarding the buying and selling of exotic animals. And while these monkeys do not fall under this brackets, residents need to be aware of the ongoing malpractice. These animals are not pets. And buying/selling them online is just wrong.
