Residents of Dubai Silicon Oasis were up in arms following a statement regarding the ‘culling’ of cats in the community.
A post to the Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority Facebook page stated that due to disturbances in the community, a number of cats were ‘culled’, while others were returned to their owners and others were handed to the Municipalities vet section.
The post resulted in uproar from the community and the authority quickly retracted its statement, apologising to the community for the inaccurate use of the term ‘culling’ and clarified that no cats were harmed.
According to the statement, there were complaints from residents in the community about cats causing disturbances in the area. The post went on to state that five cats had been culled, in line with Dubai Municipality guidelines and regulations. Three cats were returned to their owners and two cats were handed to the Dubai Municipality vet section.
Noting the high level of engagement on the issue and praising the united community, the authority apologised for the use of terminology, ‘that do not accurately reflect the actions that took place’.
The statement went on to note the actual events, ‘five cats were captured from the area surrounding the Cedre Villas Community Centre, and three of these were returned to their owners. The remaining two were stray cats and were handed over to the Dubai Municipality veterinary section unharmed’.
