Social media influencers listen up, it’s time to start labelling your sponsored posts correctly.
Social media influencers are still accepting money for posts to their social media accounts, but not describing them as “paid advertisements” according to a discussion at the Federal National Council (FNC), via Khaleej Times on Tuesday.
Members of the debate called for closer observation of the content shared by influencers, mainly in the fashion world, as it’s claimed many are not declaring their posts as paid. New laws, which will come into effect at the end of June state people will face penalties for not declaring paid posts.
If you’re accepting payment to promote a brand, goods or services, you will need a licence by the end of June 2018. Fines of up to AED5,000 and the termination of the blog, website or social media page will be in place for those who fail to acquire the correct licence.
“If you post a video promoting a cafe, you need to inform your followers that you are being paid for it, before being paid.
This is part of consumer protection, yet we still find many social media influencers not abiding by the regulations.”
FNC member Hamad Al Rahoomi.
