A practical manual for labourers in the UAE has been released and will eventually be distributed to the over one million labourers working here.
The guidelines are available in English, Urdu and Arabic and include safety tips and rights and laws to be aware of, according to Major-General Obaid Mohair bin Surour, deputy director of the General Directorate for Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) via the Khaleej Times.
The guide notes rights workers should be aware of including ‘working hours, overtime, salary, medical benefits, days off, public holidays, end of service benefits, and accommodation allowances’, among others.
It outlines the importance of personal safety in the workplace and the need for protective equipment including ‘safety helmets, ear protection, goggles, safety boots, dust masks, hi-visibility jackets and other equipment’.
It also outlines keys laws to be aware of and the fines and penalties for violating such laws; working for someone who is not your sponsor, (this can rack up fines of AED50,000) overstaying visas, drug trafficking, absconding, rioting, theft, robbery, illegal consumption of alcohol, perjury, gambling and arson’.
While the handbook will eventually distributed to all workers for free, it will soon be available at some Dubai Medical Fitness Training Centres including Al Muhaisana and Jebel Ali Free Zone centres.
