The UAE and India have agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in order to combat human trafficking between the two nations.
Over 150,000, people are known to be trafficked within South Asia every year but real figures of such an underground crime could be much higher. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has reported that South Asia is the world’s fasting growing region for trafficking, and second largest overall, after South East Asia.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave the country’s approval for the MoU yesterday, under which, a joint task force with representatives from both sides will monitor its implementation.
Under the accord, aimed at helping women and children in particular, anti-trafficking units from both countries will exchange informations to ensure rapid investigations and prosecutions of traffickers, while safeguarding the rights of victims, who will be sent home quickly for “safe and effective reintegration”.
The Economic Times (Part of The India Times) reported, from a press bureau statement, that: “India is both a source and transit country for trafficking to the UAE. Men, women and children are taken there from South Asia, Southeast and Central Asia and eastern Europe and tricked into forced labour and sex work.”
The agreement will form an even stronger bond between the two countries.
