Imagine a place where education feels more like discovery than routine, where curiosity drives the day, and every moment sparks something new. That’s exactly what we found in Zanzibar.
We travelled there in October 2025, expecting to see schools and classrooms. What we found instead was a movement, one that’s redefining how kids learn, dream, and create.
Our first stop: the Kwarara Media Education Centre (KMEC). Here, we watched something amazing unfold: children across Zanzibar learning through radio lessons! Every day, they tune in to energetic, interactive broadcasts teaching English, math, and more. Even in villages far from any school building, the sound of learning carries through the air. It’s creative, resourceful, and genuinely moving to see how technology and storytelling are keeping education alive everywhere.

Then came Assalam Village in Kizimkazi, and wow, it was buzzing with energy. Over 200 students were knee-deep in coding, robotics, and hands-on experiments. We watched them build small machines, solve puzzles, and light up with pride as they explained their projects. There’s something magical about seeing a kid’s face when their idea works, that mix of joy, pride, and “I did it!” that no textbook can teach.

At Dunga School, we saw what’s called the Teach at the Right Level approach. Instead of every student being pushed through the same lessons, each one learns at their own speed. It’s personal, empowering, and you can feel the difference in the room. Kids who once struggled are suddenly confident, excited, and helping each other out. It’s proof that sometimes, the simplest changes make the biggest impact.
The final day took us to the Zanzibar National STEAM Bootcamp Award Ceremony, and it was electric. Students from across the island came together to show off their projects, from eco-friendly designs to creative tech inventions. It wasn’t just an award show…it was a celebration of possibility. You couldn’t help but feel hopeful watching these young change makers take the stage, ready to shape the future.
The partnership between Dubai Cares and HRE Development is making real, visible change, but it’s the kids, their ideas, their confidence, their laughter that make it unforgettable. As we left the island, one thought stuck with us: learning isn’t just about classrooms and textbooks. It’s about giving every child the chance to wonder, to try, and to believe that they can make a difference.
If you ever get the chance to see it for yourself, don’t miss it, because education is being reimagined here, and it’s nothing short of inspiring.
