salary vs flexibility

The Michael Page Talent Trends 2023 report is here! This is a summary of nearly 70,000 professionals, across 37 markets, and they’re calling it ‘the invisible revolution’.

People are clocking out, and no industry or age group is safe. Resignations continue to rise and while residents continue to search for career flexibility, salary and career progression remain the top pull factors for anyone looking for a new role.

In the explosive survey, they’re calling it ‘the Unravelling & the most profound transformation of work culture since the arrival of the internet’. Key findings include: 95% of employees are open to new opportunities, 6 in 10 would choose work life balance over career success, they delve deep into the sought-after work-life equation.

Changes in employee attitudes and motivations have profoundly affected the talent landscape across all age groups, countries, and industries. But what happens when the job hunt begins? Here are the deciding factors when people look for a new job

The trends report continues that employees are now seeking a work-life equation balance

It says employees are now empowered and employers must adjust to a relationship that’s mutually beneficial for employer and employee.

Employees are now geared towards flexibility; compensation and career growth continue to factor highly for employees considering new positions.

It boils down to a simple trade-off: “what I get” versus “what I give”. Transactional. Simple. Clear. Measurable.

The report summarises that the employee-employer relationship must be reevaluated to bring value to both parties.

What is the work life equation?

  • Pay should be fairly benchmarked for job satisfaction and talent attraction
  • Flexibility – A universal right, not a privilege — the new hygiene factor
  • Career growth – Differentiate talent development to counteract growing disloyalty and draw in top talent

The report says there are ‘seismic shifts in employee attitudes and motivations have created a new talent landscape’ leaving no age group, market, or industry unaffected. If follows by adding that ‘there’s no going back to the way things were prepandemic; the change we see today is here to stay. Job loyalty is now the exception, not the rule. Even generally happy employees are open to moving on to a better opportunity.’
