One Twitter User Brought Up A Very Good Point About VAT In The UAE And It Got People Talking
VAT was introduced in the UAE on January 1, and residents are slowly beginning to see how it will affect them.
With many sharing their VAT receipts online to discuss the damage, one Twitter user made a valid point about the smaller charges; how do you pay .5fils without a .5fils coin?
Mate of mine went to buy chai for 1 AED. Was charged 1.5 AED ‘due to VAT’. 5% on 1AED = 1.05AED. We don’t have 5 fils in UAE, only 25 and 50. How is someone meant to pay for something like this? Is this a new level of price gouging? #VATinUAE #UAEVAT

And a couple of people have noticed
My first purchase with VAT. Can anyone from @MashreqTweets or @EmiratesNBD or @DIBtoday or anyone for that matter comment on whether or not smaller currency will be released to accomodate this or do we have to do everything by card, piling up charges in the process? pic.twitter.com/qk8mutKKIQ

Residents might expect prices to get rounded up
This happened in Ireland in 2002 when the EURO was introduced. Everything was rounded up to the nearest 10c. I very much expect this to happen here. https://t.co/oN782KIFcI

And the reaction is mixed
But positivity will get us far
Just paid VAT for the first time. And I’m still alive. It’s gonna be okay everyone!
