The United Arab Emirates Space Agency has announced that they have plans to send one of their own probes to Mars.
The probe, named Al Amal, is set to reach on the anniversary of the UAE’s 50th independence day in 2021.
Al Amal, which translates to Hope, is set out to study the atmosphere of Mars as to help better understand the Earth’s atmosphere.
It will be the first Arab and Islamic probe to visit Mars
Objectives of the mission not only include developing knowledge, but encouraging innovation, elevating the UAE’s status in the space race as well as furthering the UAE efforts in scientific explorations.
The mission, that is set to begin in 2020, has already a total funding of $5.4 billion by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre where the probe is currently being developed in partnership with international parties.
“We chose the epic challenge of reaching Mars because epic challenges inspire us and motivate us. The moment we stop taking on such challenges is the moment we stop moving forward.”
HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
