Khalaf Ahmed Al Habtoor Explains Why It Should Be Called Arabian Gulf

Mayar Ibrahim

The Founding Chairman of Al Habtoor Group, Khalaf Ahmed al Habtoor dove into the history of the Arabian Gulf. Within its history, he curated a well researched argument as to why people should call it the Arabian Gulf and not the Persian Gulf.

When it comes to the Gulf, there has been a never ending debate whether it is called the Arabian Gulf or the Persian Gulf. The Gulf is the body of water bordering Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and Oman.

Khalaf Ahmed al Habtoor posted a few paragraphs going into historical and geographical detail about the Arabian Gulf

In the post the Founding Chariman states:

“I find that the use of the term “Persian Gulf” is not only a provoking discourse towards the Arab Gulf countries. However, it is also misleading and baseless.”

Khalaf Ahmed al Habtoor further writes:

“The correct and only name is Arabian Gulf and this designation has historical roots that extended back thousands of years (633 AED – since the Battle of Sallasil).”

Furthermore, he goes into the discourse of the term “Persian.” Khalaf Ahmed Al Habtoor stated that the term is linked to the modern Persian presence. Moreover, he links the term with historic facts when he states:

“The term does not go back to more than the Safavid dynasty (1501-1736 AD).”

Moving on to the Geographic location of the Arabian Gulf, he states that it overlooks Iran on one hand. Especially alongside Arabistan and Al Ahwaz, which he states are definitely Arab regions. On the other hand, the Arabian Gulf overlooks the Arab Gulf Countries which are completely Arab countries.

Finally, he ends his statement with:

“All this proves to us that the Arabian Gulf has been “Arab” for thousands of years, and it will remain Arab no matter how many attempts are made to “Francis” it.”
