A Jordanian Journalist Has Been Jailed In Abu Dhabi Over Comments He Made On Facebook


A Jordanian journalist has been sentenced to three years in jail and a fine of AED500,000 for comments he made on Facebook, criticising the UAE. 

The journalist was charged for “insulting symbols of the state” on Facebook by the Abu Dhabi courts.

It’s reported he made comments in 2015 criticising the UAE and other countries in the involvement of the Gaza War. 

The social media accounts will be shut down, and he will be deported after his jail term

It is illegal, under Article 29 of the cybercrime law, to publish content online  “with intent to make sarcasm or damage the reputation, prestige or stature of the State or… any of its symbols”.
