Five Cannons Are Getting Ready To Be Fired Up Around The City To Announce The Start Of Iftar
Cannons which traditionally announce the start of iftar are being prepared by Dubai Police at five points around the city.
Every day during the holy month of Ramadan, one cannon is fired at sunset, two will be fired at the start of the holy month and two again to signify the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid.
The tradition goes back to the 1960s
Lt.Col Eng. Abdullah Mubarak bin Mussbeh, Head of the Arms and Ammunition department at the General Department of Services and Supplies at Dubai Police said the department has six cannons, including four core and two reserves, in case any of the cannons malfunctions.
The boom of each shot can reach a sound range of 170 decibels, in the past this would reach most residential communities, however with urban expansion the range is considerably less.
The cannons are placed at the Burj Khalifa, Eid prayer grounds in Deira and Bur Dubai, Safa Park and at Jumeirah Beach Residence.
