Burna Boy Wasn’t Paid His $5M Dubai Gig Fee Because Of Strong Anti-Drug Laws
Turning down a chance to be in Dubai?! No big deal with Burna Boy apparently
The Afrobeats artist shared a freestyle video of him yesterday, where he sings out that he turned down a $5M offer to play in Dubai
And the reason is definitely interesting.
“Just now I turn down Dubai money, $5m na small thing, Cos me I no dey like to dey go. Where dey no gree me smoke Igbo”
Burna Boy said he rejected the offer because the drug laws in the UAE don’t let him smoke
The drug he wants to smoke is marijuana. And although one may not respect his choices, we can respect his choice to respect the country’s rules by staying away.
The UAE has a strict drug policy and laws in place which enforce ‘zero tolerance’ for drugs. The Federal Law no. 14 of 1995 on the countermeasures against narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances (‘Narcotics Law’) criminalizes the procurement, import, export, manufacture, extraction, separation, production, possession, acquisition and abuse of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, as well as all the other types of activities and acts in connection therewith (Article 7).
The narcotics law categorizes drugs into two categories of:
- “Narcotic drugs” mean any of the substances, natural or synthetic, in Schedules 1, 2, 3 and 4, annexed to this Law. These include substances such as cannabis, cocaine, heroin, methadone, nicomorphine, opium etc; and
- “Psychotropic substances” mean any of the substances, natural or synthetic, in Schedules 5, 6, 7 and 8 such as butalbital, barbital, aminorex, ethinamate etc.
