Iran’s Sporting Team To Face Consequences For Standing In Support Of The Women’s Protests

Iran’s sporting teams have been on a roll signalling their utmost support to the women’s movement in their home country.

Two recent instances to have made headlines are Iran’s water polo team refusing to sing the national anthem before the opening match of Tuesday’s Asian Championship against India and the Iran football team showing solidarity during the match against Brazil at the Emirates Intercontinental Beach Soccer Cup in Dubai.

After Iran defeated Brazil in the finals of the Beach Soccer Cup match on Sunday, Saeed Piramoon (who scored the winning goal) imitated cutting his hair off as a display of his support for the nationwide protests in Iran over women’s rights.

Moreover, similar to the water polo match that took place later that week, Iranian football players were seen not singing the country’s national anthem

The women’s revolution follows the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who passed away while under the custody of Iran’s moral police for allegedly not wearing her hijab correctly.

A statement published by Iran’s Football Federation said, “people who have not followed professional and sports ethics … will be dealt with according to the regulations.”

The federation added that “as per regulations of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Olympic Code of Ethics and the rules of FIFA, political behaviour must be avoided in sports fields.”

These radical actions by Iran’s sporting teams in support of the eight-week-old protests were lauded by social media users who are deeming this as “impactful” and “brave”

The popular revolt is seeing support from the likes of international celebrities, lawyers, students, doctors and athletes
